What Are Ecomuseums?

The ecomuseum is an institution designed to preserve, transmit, and enhance the cultural and natural heritage of a territory.
Unlike a traditional museum with collections displayed in a single building, an ecomuseum is a widespread project that actively involves the community in managing and narrating its own history and identity. In this sense, the ecomuseum is a living entity that adapts to the needs of the community and the transformations of the territory.
As De Varine put it: “An ecomuseum is a mirror in which a population looks at itself to recognize its own identity, seeking an explanation of the territory to which it belongs, together with the populations that preceded it, in the discontinuity or continuity of generations. A mirror that this population offers to its visitors, to be better understood, while respecting its work, its behaviors, and its intimacy.”
Thus, an ecomuseum is not merely about preserving the past; it also promotes educational, tourism, and cultural activities that foster awareness of cultural heritage and a sense of belonging.
Through an integrated approach, an ecomuseum can contribute to the sustainable development of an area by creating synergies between institutions, associations, and citizens. This makes ecomuseums a valuable resource for territorial enhancement, promoting experiential and responsible tourism.
One of the most important tools used by ecomuseums is the Community Map, a key element of the participatory process through which cultural and natural heritage is mapped, identifying the places and traditions to be preserved and promoted.
Additionally, the success of an ecomuseum depends on building and maintaining a network of stakeholders—such as public institutions, associations, and citizens—to define a shared strategy for its management and development.
Several Italian regions have developed official guidelines and standards for the establishment and recognition of ecomuseums, demonstrating the value that institutions place on these initiatives.
